Inspiring a Better Response to Radicalisation

Radical – New Insights into a Pressing Global Issue

Radicalisation is much more than an Islamic problem. It is a human problem, fuelled by the fact that so many young people feel they lack a place or voice in mainstream society. The Oasis Inspire programme seeks to support young people in finding a positive narrative for their lives, immune to the lure of gangs, violence, extremism and terror.

In February 2016, Steve Chalke, Founder of Oasis released Radical, a new book that argues that preventing extremism is not enough; we all need to live by a story which is as radical as those peddled by extremists with a dangerous ideology.

In Radical, Steve writes: “You can’t kill an evil ideology by taking down a person, a thousand people, or even ten thousand people. All you will do is feed it. It will transmute, return and bite you harder. If we are going to overcome the escalating problem of extremism and terrorism that our world faces, we need a different answer. We need to find a narrative that is radical enough to turn the tide.”

Inspiring Young People to Defeat Radicalisation

To accompany the release of Radical, the Oasis Foundation has launched Inspire, a peacemaking programme that will enable educationalists to embed principals of purpose, peace and identity into the curriculum. A programme that will enable young people to demonstrate peacemaking in their own communities.

While nobody can disagree with the aims of the UK’s PREVENT strategy, if we want to defeat radicalisation for good, we must learn to ‘inspire’ rather than to simply ‘prevent’.

Inspire will be a peace-making initiative designed to support young people in finding a positive narrative for their lives; a sense of worth, direction and belonging which will enable them to live fulfilling, peaceful lives in which they aren’t vulnerable to the lure of gangs, violence, extremism and terror.
